Call for Papers

The Bandung International Conferences on Language & Education – jointly organised every two years by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), the University of Leeds (UK) and the British Council in Indonesia – explore issues of topical concern to language specialists and language educators in Indonesia. They also attract significant numbers of participants from other parts of the world.

BICOLE 12 focuses on Active and Autonomous Language Learning for the Millennial Generation (‘kids jaman now’ in current parlance). Recent and ongoing research by Dörnyei, Lamb and others highlights the importance of motivation in successful language learning. However, motivation today is understood to be far more complex than the earlier ‘extrinsic’ versus ‘intrinsic’ distinction suggested. An essential element in motivation is the way in which the language learner perceives him- or herself as a speaker of the target language (the ‘L2 self’).

These developments have important implications for language learning processes:

  • If learners need to be active and autonomous in their learning, what then is the function of formal language learning and teaching in classroom settings?
  • Why does formal language learning and teaching in classroom settings in Indonesia still tend to be heavily teacher-centred?
  • What experiments have there been in Indonesia and elsewhere to introduce classroom processes that encourage active and autonomous learning? What long-term impact have these experiments had (if any)?
  • What can language teachers do to support the active and autonomous learning of their learners?
  • How should language teachers rethink their roles as facilitators of the language learning process?

In order to address these questions, BICOLE 12 is organised around six sub-themes:

  1. Making Language Classrooms Active
  2. Language Learner Autonomy and Motivation
  3. Active and Autonomous Language Teachers
  4. Technology and Language Learning
  5. Multimodal Literacy for Successful Language Learning
  6. Measuring the Impact of Innovations in Learning and Teaching
